Sadly the stories do not get tied up nicely and it leaves you wanting more. Like Tai-Pan, the ending disappointed me.


The idea silently crawled into my head, inconspicuous, the same way the hero was inconspicuous, but at the same time so strongly present everywhere. Maybe it’s me, maybe it’s just that the book is heavier than the usual, brilliant James Clavell.

But to be honest, by reading couple of his books already, I learned that ends of Clavell’s stories aren’t meant to be “liked”. With respect to the traders, there are two big trading houses that play big roles, Struan’s and Brock’s which were both introduced and were the main source of conflict in the previous book. As with Clavell’s other novels, the setting and many characters are based on actual events, which set the stage for the novel.

I really wish he would have taken her one way or the other, at least she would have been interesting. Despite that there is no question James Clavell is an I am only giving this book 3 stars as it was just a really heavy read for me.

Although Clavell clearly takes this hackwork as weighty and worthy entertainment, the heart quails at a serious weighing of a novel peopled with larger-than-life comic-strip characters caught up in cliches of Japanese exotica and international business deals as well as of internecine warfare–all of which Clavell writes at full throttle as if infused by the soul of Alexandre Dumas.
