For dark, astounding irony about inaction and the parodoxes of a corrupt society, read Catch or some of the more comical writers of astroyphysics tomes. Ignatius is a tiresome, boorish person neciow follow. Over pages, and nothing to quote. A Confederacy of Dunces. A Confederacy of Dunces keeps my faith in books in ways that few other novels can.
Toope Reilly Ignatius is a resident of ‘s New Orleans, the fat kid in school who turns out to be a genius, but has no social graces. Do I sound like a terrible curmudgeon right now? A Confederacy of Dunces: Want to Read saving…. Senior Editor Robert Gottlieb worked with Toole through the year, resulting in many revisions.

The group was roughly split on loving or hating the book, and responses lived at those two extremes. The story of Toole, and the novel by which he apparently vented the demons that lurked within his existentially unhale self, is a sad one, and that foreknowledge endows A Confederacy of Dunces with a patina of melancholy before the first page is turned; a lacquer directly at odds with the immensely high expectations and consequent eagerness I brought into its reading due to the superlatives I had discovered ere I opted to take the plunge: Failing to negotiate his way through the debauchery, Ignatius ends up ejected and dejected in the street, where he is almost run over by the reality of a city bus.
My God, if I’d only persevered for another year or so, I’d have been rich! Or is it his own distorted reality, paranoid delusions, and ineptitude that is the impetus of his misfortune?

It was my buddy Colin who picked the book. Nov 17, Perry rated it it was amazing Shelves: On the other hand, there were some redeeming dramatis personae to be found amidst Toole’s merry band of walking character flaws. I suspect that they can see that I am forced to function in a century conjua I loathe. In Toole was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
He was working on his doctoral studies when called up for military service in and was stationed in Puerto Rico. But to its credit, Dunces has some redemption, some easy to find, other examples more subtle.

The book is a bit fluffier than I remember, not a literary megalith, but certainly entertaining. Despite having been earlier rejected by publishers, the book went on to win the Pulitzer Prize. Percy reluctantly agreed, but upon completing the read recognized that he had read something great. A weird and wonderful book. Even after he had put the book down, he couldn’t help suddenly bursting out into ocnjura.
It should be thrown with great force. I think I have a new favorite book.

I had heard that this was supposed to be an foole book; I don’t think I laughed once. That’s what’s wrong with this book.
Ignatius Reilly is a man at odds with the modern world.
Reader, I hated him. But he isn’t virtuous as we would normally use the word.
