While I didn’t know why they committed the crimes they had until the end of the book, I still found it very hard to read the entire story. There was no mystery for me and no suspense.

The Gallows Bird
In addition, the situation of Hedstrom’s sister-in-law didn’t seem to be handled in a realistic manner. If you’ve read the prior books, you know Anna suffered a horrible event recently. In this book, she is suffering from a serious depression in the aftermath of a horrible tragedy. And yet it only takes one visit from one of Hedstrom’s acquaintances to bring her out of it and cure her depression seemingly within a couple of hours.
I like Lackberg well enough to try her next book. But if it’s not any better than this one, I may not be reading much further in the series.

Helaas besloot ik dit keer om het niet bij nieuwsgierigheid te laten, maar ook daadwerkelijk zo’n boek op te pakken; een grove vergissing. Nov 18, Kayleigh rated it did not like it. Do not waste your time on this book. Sigh, this one really bored me.
Jun 24, Kathy rated it did not like it Shelves: Okay, Camilla Lackberg is beginning to be annoying. I thought her first crime novel in this series was really good, but it seems to have been downhill since then. This, the fourth in the series, had three faults: I worked out who the murderer was less than a quarter of the way in; 2. I won’t go into the other Okay, Camilla Lackberg is beginning to be annoying. I won’t go into the other bits that I worked out because that would be a spoiler, but, in short, Lackberg’s plots are not intelligent enough.
And she continues to withold information from the reader in a really dumb and clunky attempt at suspense. Far too much of this novel was devoted to a narrative about the contestants in some kind of a reality tv show.
This really unbalanced the entire story because most of the information was just a rather tedious diversion. Perhaps I’m just too old to be interested in teenagers getting drunk and making fools of themselves? What a disappointment this book was. After the great books Lackberg had written previously this book really fell flat. The book itself was padded with so much “filler” and “fluff” that it was possible to skip thru the entire book quickly and not miss anything.
In this book there are 2 parallel plots– the 1st has to do with a woman found dead at the wheel of her car with unexplained toxic levels of alcohol in her body. Then the author inserts this parallel plot about a group of young reality stars whi What a disappointment this book was.
Then the author inserts this parallel plot about a group of young reality stars which not only is pointless but takes away anything that could be salvaged fomr the 1st plot. I sure hope this is an anomaly by Lackberg and that she returns to the talent that she has shown before. I will exercise caution before I read another book by her. Someone used the word “tedious”, and I agree completely. The novel also lacks an acceptable level of sophistication.
Lot’s of problems with the translation. Also, the author’s obsession with marriage and babies was awkward. Lackberg’s use of keeping the knowledge of certain facts from the reader while making it clear that the actors in the novel know the facts made me crazy. A convention that can be used very occasionally by some really smart writers is an awful style when not done well. The read Someone used the word “tedious”, and I agree completely. The reader was also not one of my favorites.
I don’t know why I wasted my time on reading this whole book.
The Gallows Bird – Wikipedia
The characters are flat and the plot is not compelling. There’s no build up of suspense. Hands down the weakest of the series so far. I struggled to finish it. Completely lacking everything I love about Scandinavian crime fiction. Everything else she has done has been solid so I’ll give the next installment a shot. Dec 07, Billie Raven rated it did not like it. I find this book disgusting.
If I biird climb through a forest of countless characters I might not have found the dialogue quite so offensive. As it stands, I put this book down shortly after beginning and vowed to read no more of this author. I did not like it. I had a hard time just getting to the middle. To many stories that don’t feed into one another yet I suppose they will. I may try again later but not likely.
