In Israel, where books and the controversies surrounding them make the headlines far more often than in the United States, the Education Ministry recently decided to publicly announce that a certain controversial koestlsr — controversial because it depicted a romantic relationship between an Arab and a Jew — would not be included among the books suggested for classroom use across the country.

But the cumulative evidence makes one inclined to agree with the concensus of Polish historians that “in earlier times the main bulk originated from the Khazar country”; and that, accordingly, the Khazar contribution to the genetic make-up of the Jews must be substantial, and in all likelihood dominant.

This book traces the history of the ancient Khazar Empire, a major but almost forgotten power in Koestlr Europe, which in the Dark Ages became converted to Judaism. It is perhaps not surprising, given these circumstances, that in — after a resounding Khazar victory over the Arabs— the future Emperor Constantine V married a Khazar princess.

The Thirteenth Tribe: The Khazar Empire and its Heritage

Although it is a small book, it took me a while to read, going back and forth between sources for verification and history brush-up, however it was very much worth all the effort. So what to make of all this? Jews fled Rome and Greece to Khazaria to avoid forced conversion to Christianity.

In fact there is no evidence.

The proof for mass conversion of the Khazar people to Judaism and their subsequent mass migration to the Polish Empire and then into the area of the Russian Empire after the Polish partitions of the 18th century lacks anything approaching conclusive evidence. The Scythian, Magyar, Saltovo, Bulgar, and Pecheneg peoples also inhabited this area and their histories in this area are also relatively unknown. Amazingly, no small amount of what we know about the Khazars, and the only surviving source written of their own hand, is a series of letters exchanged between Hasdai in al-Andalus and Joseph, the Khazar kagan king in Itil, a city on the shore of the Caspian Sea that was, at the time, 15 days sail from Constantinople via the Black Sea, the Don, and then the Volga Rivers.

However, the evidence he does present, for instance coroborating evidence of a conversion to Judaism and a north and westward migration of the Khazars should not be ignored.

Koestler’s enumeration of a much older theory that Khazar converts formed some of the bulk of European Jewry is very interesting, if nothing else. We know in fact that aboutGermans, in the wake of the devastating Black Death, did exactly that in the 14th and 15th centuries.

His earlier books were mainly concerned with these experiences, either in autobiographical form or in essays or political novels. In he was interned in a French detention camp. Though he studied science and psychology in Vienna, at the age of twenty he became a foreign correspondent and worked for various European newspapers in the Middle East, Paris, Berlin, Russia and Spain.

Their claim as the biblical Jew is a lie. America’s government and most of her people’s sources of information are controlled and directed by Jews. The late antiquity and early medieval periods are generally unknown to most people even when considering the geographic areas typically studied in high school i. I am seeing so many posts about it just lately that I dare say the majority of those spreading these trendy posts haven’t actually spent any significant time to study it from both sides.

This remark by the Jew Cecil Roth, coupled with other 13hh, is a sorrowful admission that the Jews were supreme in the Dark Ages but lost their dominion over Europe when the Light of God’s Word brought about the Renaissance! Jews were mintmasters, royal treasurers, tax collectors, and money lenders.

The Thirteenth Tribe: The Khazar Empire and its Heritage by Arthur Koestler

Every church member in America should insist that his Pastor investigate these claims. The last chapter of his book is a veritable fun house of questionable, even dubious, scientific findings that have much aarthur common with the socio-biological myths that were fed to race-hungry publics in the early part of the 20th century.

You also get a lot of interesting general history of the area that the Khazars came out of using various sources, in particular Ibn Fadlan who is best known for his writings on the Viking Rus that were in that area during the time he was.

A really fascinating show arhur one that should be shared. The Thirteenth Tribe is a book by Arthur Koestlerin which the author advances the thesis that Atrhur Jews are not descended from the historical Israelites of antiquity, but from Khazarsa Turkic people.

However, it remains a thesis, and a thesis which is disputed wildly from all sides of the arena.

The Russians, on the koesrler hand, are more likely culprits and they left behind koesrler of evidence. This theory is a quite rational one though it poses problems for Orthodox Jewry since the premise of the faith depends so much though not exclusively on the historical link to Abraham, a Semite.

A very important, thought-provoking program. Thus Orthodox Jews have not been quick to embrace the Khazar thesis and others tend to shy away from it for this and other reasons.

It should be read by every non-Jew. To ask other readers questions about The Thirteenth Tribeplease sign up. Retrieved from ” https: Rise, Conversion, Decline, and Fall.
