The Different Types of Massage
For the most part, people want to get the benefits of a massage therapy for the purpose of alleviating a specific discomfort felt by the body. Massage in its entirety has been used by humans for thousands of years and all throughout its history, there have been so many different forms that emerged.
In the most traditional sense, a massage will work by applying pressure and movement to certain parts of the body, including but not limited to the muscles, skin, ligaments, and tendons. And while there are probably over a hundred different massages with unique names and features today, there remains to be just a few that are recognized around the world. So this article is basically about those most popular and common types of massage you probably already have heard.
1 – Swedish massage
This right here deserves to be mentioned first. This type of massage is by far the most popular and the most notable reason is because it is effective in improving the blood flow to the skin and muscles. And by doing so, it effectively removes muscle tension.
2 – Sports massage
Based on the term, this massage variant is specially used for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and physically active individuals. It is unique to all the other types because it is a lot more vigorous. The original purpose of this body massage is to provide warm up to the muscle tissues, which athletes need; but overtime, it has become quite a valuable help in training as well as the prevention and/or treatment of an injury.
3 – Reflexology
If you aren’t familiar with this one, that’s because it is one of the newer variants of massage these days. It is based on the logic that every organ in the body is mapped to the feet and hands. In order for this method to be effective, finger pressure as well as stretching is used on the feet’s pressure points, the purpose of which is to promote healthier body organs.
4 – Shiatsu
This distinctive form of massage is gaining a huge following in the West because of its similarity to acupuncture. According to the beliefs of shiatsu, the body is comprised of interconnected energy pathways that are unfortunately prone to getting blocked, and when there is a blockage to the flow of energy, there will exist some kind of imbalance. Because of this imbalance in energy blow, the body will feel pain, tension, as well as overall weakness. But with the help of a shiatsu practitioner using pressure and stretching, the key points in one’s body will be tapped for the purpose of restoring balance.
